It was an evening at the Music Academy when music, dance, visuals and commentary were woven together into a delightful tapestry of varied hues and moods. The inspiring temples, where legends and history were enacted, were beautifully delineated by historian Dr. Chithra Madhavan who, in her gentle style of narration, gave the proceedings a riveting quality.Tying up speech, dance, music and colourful costumes into a dance-drama is usually pass&eacute;, but not when the quality of dance and the contents is interestingly brought to the stage. It then becomes something to remember and applaud.That Anitha Guha is an accomplished teacher is what stands out when she puts her students on stage in her elaborate productions under the banner of Bharathanjali. Her dance dramas are almost always based on mythology and the beautiful tales of yore. Not only does she manage to bring a sense of oneness to the grand scheme of things, but also choreographs the stories in an interesting manner. There are no layers in her offerings; they are simple, direct and unpretentious. The costumes and accessories are usually an amalgam of colours cut in the conventional format, making it easy for viewers to relate to what they have imagined and grown up with. So Siva would be donning the leopard skin, the fake snake around his&nbsp;neck and the humble rudraksha beads all over. Such literal interpretation would be true of most characters that appear in her productions. Yet they are done with some sense of aesthetics&mdash;and that finally goes on to add to the excellent dancing and choreographic patterns of the dance-drama.In this tribute to Ambujam Krishna, Kshetrambuja Mala, however, the songs led the dance pieces and each one of them had stories within it. There was good synergy and there was elegance too.With inputs and guidance from Sujatha Vijayaraghavan, Kshetrambhuja Mala covered Vezhamukhattarase (Darbar, Adi), Aadumpaadanai (Latangi, Adi), Ambikaye arul purivai (Anandabhairavi), Azhaga azhaga (Suddha Dhanyasi, Khanda Chapu), Azhagar Chittirai Tiruvizha, Dasavataram, Azhaganai (Poorvikalyani), Om namo Narayana (Karnaranjani), Guruvayoor Appaney (Reetigaula) blended to form a single padam, Ododi vanden Kanna (Dharmavati) and a tillana followed by Minnal kodiyo ena (ragamalika) that showcased the Andal Kalyanam.&nbsp;While these were the songs chosen, each of the pieces had moments that stood out thanks to the commentary and visuals screened in the background. The anecdotal history and legends surrounding each of the musical compositions were brought out with effective integration of the dance and high quality of the dancing. With the dancers appropriately attired to reflect the storytelling, the stage formations were sometimes stunning, especially in the Dasavataram. The avatars were effectively portrayed and&nbsp;the transition from one avatar to the next was smooth and well thought out.The members of the orchestra were Anitha Guha and Jayashree Ramanathan (nattuvangam), Hariprasad (vocal), G. Ramshankar Babu (mridangam), Ganapathy (tabla and other percussion), Easwar Ramakrishnan (violin), and Shashidhar (flute). P.R. Venkatasubramanian provided additional music support and the jatis by Ram Shankar Babu completed the musical ensemble for the dance.Says Anitha Guha who is grateful to Radha Parthasarathy, Suresh Krishna, Ramesh and Mahesh Krishna (the children of Ambujam Krishna) for enabling her to present something like this. &ldquo;I was very happy to work on this project as I love and adore Ambujam Krishna&rsquo;s songs for their poetry, beauty, simplicity and devotion.
