In the first of a new series about photo retailers, we talk to Matt Barker of MPB
Why did you start the business?
I developed an interest in the second-hand photography market while studying for my degree in economics at the University of Warwick. A small eBay store became a sideline eCommerce site, which was eventually spun in 2011 into MPB as it exists today.
Do you recall the first thing you sold?
Way back in my university days, prior to the launch of MPB, it would have been a Canon EOS 3 35mm SLR. For MPB the first item sold was a Canon EF 100-400mm IS Mark I lens.
What do you think sets you apart?
At our core we are a technology start-up on a mission to give consumers all over the world the best place on the internet to buy, sell or trade photographic or video equipment. We have invested hugely in building the company to what it is today. We view the world a little differently to most rivals, and this defines what MPB is like as a company to work for, and as a platform to trade on.
