As the host of one of the DIY Network’s most popular shows, “Yard Crashers,” a contractor and a full-time Realtor, Matt Blashaw has seen his share of outdoor spaces that work … and ones that don’t. In this Q&A, he shares his sage advice to create the perfect log home out door environment.

LHL: What’s trending in outdoor spaces?

MB: It used to be that you just threw up a redwood picnic table, a few benches and maybe a fire pit and called it outdoor living, but that’s not the case anymore. What’s really happening with an outdoor space now is making it a true extension of the inside of your house, from outdoor fireplaces, chandeliers, curtains (they make some great outdoor fabrics nowadays), coffee tables and soft, up holstered couches.

If your log cabin is your vacation home, the idea of making your outdoor living space shine is even more important. Why? Because when you go on vacation, chances are you’re not planning to sit in your bedroom all day — you go to be in the outdoors. So you have to build that beautiful space.

What’s your #1 tip to create a beautiful, functional outdoor area?
