Nadiya Hussain is back on telly with her new series Nadiya’s British Food Adventure, where she introduces her own twist on classic faves. We shared a cuppa with the 2015 winner of The Great British Bake Off, 32, to chat family – husband Abdal, and their sons Musa, 10, Dawud, nine, and six-year-old daughter Maryam – and more…
Nadiya, tell us about your British Food Adventure…
I asked a lot of people, ‘What is British food?’ but nobody had a definitive answer. The truth is it’s more than pie and mash – it’s more diversified than ever, and I wanted to explore that and then dream up some new recipes.
What are the highlights of the series?
In Huddersfield in Yorkshire I met a lady who’d had to flee from Syria, who missed the halloumi cheese she used to have for breakfast every morning back home. When she realised that the milk in Yorkshire was the best she’d ever had, she started making the most delicious halloumi with it that I’ve ever tasted. The programme also shows how welcoming Britain is to others – and at a time like this it’s important to remember that.
Can you believe how much your life has changed since Bake Off?
I have to pinch myself sometimes! It’s wonderful and I don’t take it for granted. I make the most of every opportunity every single day. I don’t believe for a second that I’ll be doing this forever – we all have our sell-by date.
How have your kids coped with your busy new career?
