THE BALENO RS is a more powerful version of Maruti&rsquo;s popular hatchback. It gets a new turbo-petrol engine, has racier looks, and comes with the promise of better performance. But, just how good is Maruti&rsquo;s first stab at the performance hatchback segment?The highlight of the package is the 102hp, 1.0-litre, threecylinder turbo-petrol engine. Despite having a turbo, it picks up nicely from low engine speeds, and performance, as a result is quite accessible too. There&rsquo;s a clear step up in the way this engine responds once you cross 2,000rpm, after which it spins freely all the way to its 6,200rpm limiter. This motor, however, feels strongest&nbsp;between 3,000-5,000rpm. Despite its performance credentials, the Baleno RS returns a quite impressive claimed efficiency figure of 21.1kpl. The more important question here, however, is how fast is it? The Baleno RS does 0-100kph in 10sec flat; that makes it 2.6sec quicker than the standard 1.2-litre petrol motor which is a big margin indeed. Maruti, staying true to its roots of being the people&rsquo;s carmaker, has tuned this motor to work without a hiccup should you find less-than-ideal fuel quality.The car&rsquo;s suspension has been reworked as well and that&rsquo;s made it a bit more stable at speeds. Handling is improved and the car feels a bit more willing to turn in to corners. You&rsquo;ll appreciate the heavier steering as it gives you more confidence when driving at speed. It&#39;s still not bristling with feedback but it surely feels more fluid and nicer overall.The Baleno RS gets allround disc brakes and the stopping power is quite impressive. What also adds to the confidence is the pedal feel with which the brakes work.To go with the sporty theme, there are subtle styling changes, like the revised grille and different bumpers at the front and rear; the latter looks particularly aggressive. And the blacked-out accents on top of the headlamps, side skirts and the RS badge lend it a sporty character.However, inside the cabin, nothing&rsquo;s changed. The interiors look same as your standard Baleno. It doesn&rsquo;t get any additional kit either. Maruti should have focused a bit to more on the interior and at least put in a few &lsquo;RS&rsquo; bits.If you value performance and a sense of fun, you should consider the Baleno RS over the Baleno. It is faster, the steering&rsquo;s better, handling&rsquo;s improved and so has the ride over the standard car. These improvements come at a price, in this case a premium of Rs 1.4 lakh. However, it is cheaper than competition &ndash; that is Rs 40,000 less than the Polo GT TSI and Rs 1.3 lakh less than the Abarth Punto. Add to that the peace of mind you generally associate with a Maruti and the Baleno RS makes a strong case for itself.
