Toyota has added a petrol engine to its popular MPV.

Verdict Supremely comfortable, and now much more refined too.

THE INNOVA CRYSTA which was launched in May this year was well-received in our market. With a choice of two diesel engines, the option of an automatic gearbox and quality interiors, Toyota packed the Innova with all that an MPV buyer could ask for. However, the carmaker couldn't sell the Innova Crysta in Delhi due to the ban on diesel cars (with engine capacities over 2,000cc). Sure, the ban has been lifted for now, but there is still an uncertainty that looms over the future of diesel cars in India. And so, like many other carmakers, Toyota too has added a petrol engine to its tally.

The 2.7-litre petrol feels much smoother and more silent in comparison to the diesel. This adds some much needed refinement to the overall package. It moves off the line nicely and the engine pulls from low speeds are very progressive. The smooth build up of power masks the acceleration very effectively, so it doesn’t really feel like you are going fast.
