The textile industry in India includes the manufacture of yarn, fabric and readymade apparel. It was about $108 billion (approx. The falling sales and profits have meant a spate of job losses. In the past three financial years, 67 units in the cotton and man-made fibre sectors have reportedly closed down across the country, affecting 17,600 workers.Demonetisation in 2016 and GST later were two major reasons for this disruption. India&rsquo;s labour costs are higher than Bangladesh but marginally lower in Vietnam and China. The cost of capital, too, is high&mdash;China, Vietnam, Turkey offer capital at 5-7 per cent while India&rsquo;s rate is 11-12.5 per cent. This has delayed the move toward more value-added products and technological upgradation. The government&rsquo;s Rs 7,000 crore special package is seeing slow disbursement.
