Try These Wake-Up Workouts
Health & Fitness|June 2018

When you’ve been pressing snooze all winter, the arrival of light mornings can rejuvenate your fitness regime. Reclaim the early hours with these workouts

Try These Wake-Up Workouts

Sweating first thing is great for your wellness goals. Case in point: a 2011 study published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research shows that morning exercise downsizes stress levels and improves sleep. In fact, a 30-minute hike at 7am reduces blood pressure at night by 25 per cent, and reports show that those who exercise earlier in the day spend 75 per cent more time in a deep sleep. However, it can take longer for your body to warm up first thing. Research shows strength and flexibility are greatest in the afternoon, and how hard you deem exercise to be decreases as the day goes on (unless you’re in the habit of clocking a tough morning workout). Our thoughts? Focus on gentle activity that strengthens and loosens the muscles for the day ahead. Here are the science-backed ways to work out before breakfast.

YOGA SALUTATIONS

The right yoga poses can make you feel energised for the day ahead. Sun salutations are a flowing practice that boosts blood flow around the body and connects movement to breath. These moves were created for yogis to greet the sun in the AM, and are the perfect wake-up call for sleepy heads.
