Want to lose weight, boost your wellbeing and stave off winter bugs? Then you need to eat these top 10 gut-friendly foods

Chances are the only time you think about your gut is when there's something wrong with it. But, this year, all that’s set to change. ‘The gut is probably the most exciting subject in health right now,’ says H&F nutritionist Amanda Hamilton, co-author of new book The G Plan Diet (Aster, £8.99).

Indeed, a mountain of research now shows that gut health is the key not just to good digestion, but to your weight, energy levels, immunity, brain health and well being. ‘Healthy bacteria in your gut help you digest food, protect you against pathogens, provide essential nutrients, enzymes and hormones and train your immune system,’ explains Hamilton.

Your gut contains around 3lb of bacteria – collectively known as the microbiome. Everyone’s microbiome is unique. Factors such as lifestyle, stress and medication can all determine your levels of ‘good’ or ‘healthy’ bacteria, but the most important one is diet. ‘What you eat determines your personal pick ‘n’ mix of gut bacteria that are then able to help keep you happy, healthy and naturally slim,’ says Hamilton.

Ultimately your gut thrives best on a varied healthy diet. ‘Diversity is the name of the good gut-game,’ says Hamilton. But some foods are particularly gut friendly. We’ve asked Hamilton to reveal the top 10 gut foods you should be eating. Start tonight!

1. Natural yoghurt
