PRO-SLEEP LIFESTYLE

It’s common knowledge that technology on tap 24 hours a day, coupled with increasingly busy lives, has eroded our much-needed night’s sleep. But the tide is turning. ‘Consumers are reclaiming the value of shut-eye through pro-sleep lifestyles and sleep-friendly group experiences,’ says Lucie Greene, Director of trend forecasters JWT Innovation and author of its ‘Future 100’ report (jwtintelligence.com). There have been sleep-themed pop-up shops and performances in the US and even somnambulistic musical recitals in Australia, where a pyjama-clad audience was encouraged to snooze.

Here in the UK, thanks to the emergence of hip online ‘sleep space’ start ups such as Casper (casper.com), the perfect mattress and bedding are just a click away, along with websites devoted to sleeping well.

It’s not just about waking up refreshed: getting adequate regular overnight rest will make your existing healthy habits even more effective, according to research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. A 12-year study found that of the 14,000 plus participants, those who slept seven or more hours a night and had a good diet, didn’t smoke, exercised regularly and had a moderate alcohol intake were less likely to develop cardiovascular disease and far less likely to die from heart or blood vessel problems than those who didn’t get enough sleep.
