Fitness Forecast For 2017

2016 gave us boutique boxing studios, after-party workouts and on-demand fitness classes, not to mention an ongoing obsession with HIIT (high-intensity interval training) – and these things will continue to define the way we train in 2017. The latest data from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) reveals last year’s top four fitness trends – wearable technology, body-weight training, HIIT and strength training – are set to be among our top faves this year. But what will be new?

‘Plenty – there’ll be a boom in workouts that aid mobility and form to complement lifting and muscle-building efforts,’ says Lee Matthews, from Fitness First UK. Read on to discover what else will be hot over the next 12 months.

COOL CLASSES

2016 – BOUTIQUE GYMS

Barry’s Bootcamp, Spin gyms, 1Rebel, yoga studios, Heartcore – 2016 was the year of the boutique class. And it’s not hard to see why, as the boutique class has so much to offer, including a unique, often luxurious space that specialises in a small set of innovative workouts and comes with a highly sociable atmosphere and an exclusive feel. But, with Instagram offering an increasing amount of workout inspiration, and high-street stores providing fitness classes free of charge, we can’t help but wonder whether boutique workouts have reached their peak. Watch this space to find out.
