A teenager, who struggled with yo-yo dieting and self-esteem issues, is now set to revamp the health of India&rsquo;s youth. 27-year-old Priya Prakash spent most of her school years being bullied for her weight and fussing over food portion sizes. This battle, along with the shocking rise in childhood obesity, inspired Prakash to start HealthSetGo, a company that empowers children with the knowledge of nutrition and provides easy access to healthcare. The efforts won her a prized place as one of the 21 global finalists for Cartier&rsquo;s Women&rsquo;s Initiative Awards that honours entrepreneurs who have been catalysts of change in their communities. HealthSetGo has partnered with over 200 schools across 77 cities across India, and has influenced the lives of 1,50,000 students. Recently, it started working with the Visakhapatnam government to reach out to underprivileged students in 122 schools. Prakash&rsquo;s team also works with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to push schools to make policy level changes for healthier cafeterias. Here, she tells us about her journey to make India eat right.ELLE: How has your personal journey inspired HealthSetGo? Priya Prakash: Today India is the second most obese country in the world; a big reason for this is the lack of awareness and limited access to preventative healthcare. I knew I had to start a program to give children the right direction so that they don&rsquo;t go through what I did. Schools offer the right environment to impact their health.ELLE: What&rsquo;s the simplest thing a parent can do to ensure good nutrition? PP: It sounds silly when I say it, but give children &lsquo;real food&rsquo; that doesn&rsquo;t come out of a packet. Schools can also help by limiting the sale of packaged foods and providing healthier alternatives.ELLE: What has been your biggest learning? PP: Diseases that were earlier found in adults are now commonplace in our youth, and that is shocking. Over 14 million children are obese and thousands have Type 2 diabetes. The burden of disease in India is driving up prices of &lsquo;sick care&rsquo;, making insurance unaffordable and doctors inaccessible. It is predicted that 70 per cent of all unhealthy children today will need hospitalisation in the future due to entirely preventable causes. We need to work on the root cause, which is another reason for us to focus on kids from a young age.ELLE: What is your flagship program Care? PP: It addresses the school&rsquo;s complete healthcare needs, starting with an annual medical assessment for each student. This has helped us detect many issues that working parents may not get a chance to observe, like cavities or PCOD. Under this program we have also established infirmaries in schools, educated children on healthy habits and offered an insurance of 1 lakh for each student.
