The Airavateswara Temple In Darasuram

The Airavateswara Temple is a very ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is present in a town called Darasuram near Kumbakonam, in the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamilnadu. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Lord Airavateswara in this magnificent temple. This is the only temple in India that is named after Airavata, the mythological elephant of Lord Indra, the King of Heaven! It is believed that Airavata is spotless white in colour and has four tusks and seven trunks!

There are three temples where Lord Shiva is being worshipped by devotees since hundreds of years in Tamilnadu. These amazing temples i.e. the Brihadeeswara temple in Thanjavur, the Gangaikondacholiswaram temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavateswara temple in Darasuram were built by the Kings of the Chola dynasty. These temples are now referred to as ‘The Great Living Chola Temples by UNESCO.
