The Mukteshwar Mahadev temple (also known as Mukesaran Mandir is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located at a distance of about 20 kms from Pathankot City in Shaupur Kandi at Doongh village, in the Indian state of Punjab. This temple is situated atop a rocky Hill on the Banks of the River Ravi. The left bank of the River Ravi falls in the state of Punjab and the right bank of the River Ravi falls in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The view of the Ravi river along with historical temple on the rocky Hill is enchanting. It is believed that this temple was built by the Pancha Pandavas (of the Epic Mahabharata) during the Dwapara Yuga. There are also several caves on the Hill. It is believed that the Pancha Pandavas lived in these caves during the period of their exile in the forests. The caves and the temple have been carved on the Hill by the Pancha Pandavas, more than 5000 years ago! The Mukteshwar Mahadev temple is a landmark in Pathankot City and is regarded by devotees as Chota Haridwar.The Pancha Pandavas, in their last year of exile, reached Punjab, the land of the Five Rivers, and chose to spend it near the banks of the River Ravi. They selected a rocky Hill on the banks of the River Ravi and carved out five caves, one for each one of them. It is believed that they stayed here for a period of about six months. And during this period of their stay, the Pancha Pandavas built the Mukteshwar Mahadev temple on the top of the Hill. They installed the holy &lsquo;Shivaling&rsquo; in this temple and started to worship it every day. The Pancha Pandavas also started a &lsquo;Akand Dhuna&rsquo; (Holy fire) and a Rasoi (Kitchen) in this temple, which can be seen till today! And before the start of the Agyatvas, where they had to stay without being recognized by anyone, the Pancha Pandavas crossed the River Ravi and entered the Kingdom of Virat (a place called Akhnoor in today&rsquo;s Jammu &amp; Kashmir.The main deity in this temple is Lord Shiva, who is worshipped in the Sanctum of this temple as Lord Mukteshwar Mahadev. The Lord gives Darshan to devotees in the form of a white marble Shivling with a copper Yoni in this temple. The Sanctum of this temple where Lord Mukteshwar Mahadev is worshipped also has the idols of Goddess Parvathi, Lord Ganesha, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman.The Mukteshwar Mahadev temple is famous for festivals like Somvati Amavasya and Shivaratri. On auspicious days, devotees take bath in the River Ravi and then pray at the temple here, which is considered as meritorious as a trip to the sacred Haridwar. A fair called &lsquo;Mukesran Da Mela&rsquo; is held every year in the month of April, during the Baisakhi festival. This fair is very popular and many devotees of Lord Shiva visit this temple from the states of Punjab, Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Also, Pind-daan for the release of one&rsquo;s ancestors is performed by devotees in this holy place during Baisakhi.
