Being Expert With The Sexpert
SOCIETY|September 2018

In a freewheeling interview, acclaimed sexologist Dr Mahinder Watsa speaks about the need to talk about sex and sexuality in our country and his journey towards the right kind of fame. Society digs in more.

Some names when said are enough for you to know what we are talking about. Like the name Dr Mahinder Watsa… there is hardly anyone in India or abroad who hasn’t heard this name. His column in a well-known tabloid has been both informative when it comes to anything and everything related to sex. Of course, the witty replies keep the readers in splits. But the good doctor has been writing columns for various publications and his clinic has been a haven for confused souls for decades. Don’t be fooled by his age (around 94-95). His wit, sensibilities and a yearning to solve sexual issues found around will make you appreciate him.

So on a drizzling Friday morning, I went to meet him at his Shivaji Park residence-cum-clinic. I need to confess of having a fan moment thanks to his well-thought and at times funny responses to the questions. Looking at the column’s popularity, one realises the positive effect he was having on the readers. To give you more details, he is qualified gynaecologist and obstetrician, apart from being sexologist.

We meet and chat over things while his lovely pet dog playfully sniffed around and tried to engage us. The first question was posed. He has been in the profession for quite some time. And how many times does he feel he is in the right profession? He does feel someone like him is the need of the hour for people at various places, right from doctors to teachers and even counsellors. “Why? Because now rapidly all sorts of things like porn is coming and not of natural way. So even the doctors cannot keep up with such things. So they (doctors, etc.) require at least some people to be there and can be a referral. So that somebody may refer to me.”
