It’s a bright, sunny day in Mumbai. And the sunlight seems to be infusing everything with wellness – the grass looks greener and the sky bluer. We’re at Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel, on the banks of sparkling Powai Lake. The ginormous property has pools, gardens, the fantastic Quan Spa, a variety of dining options and luxuriously comfortable guest rooms and suites. It is here that we welcome Bhumi Pednekar, the girl who’s taken Bollywood by storm and won hearts with her performances. We take a liking to her at once – her face lights up with a warm smile as she greets everyone. We eventually settle into a large Duplex Suite, and over glasses of coconut water and orange juice, Bhumi begins to tell us about her admirable journey...

Tell us about your childhood. How much importance was given to creative pursuits and movies when you were growing up?

I come from a very progressive family. I grew up in Mumbai and had a very comfortable, but not spoilt childhood. My sister and I were given goals and only allowed what we desired when we had achieved these goals. My parents always encouraged me to follow through on my creative pursuits. I participated in extracurricular activities and was always the front runner at school (Arya Vidya Mandir) debates, elocution, singing and drama competitions. I was a fairly good student and never disappointed my parents as far as my grades were concerned. So, they were happy because I maintained a balance.

Coversations at home revolved around what was happening in the world, which economies were suffering, what the political scenario in the country was...My sister and I are very socially responsible and that comes from the values instilled in us by our parents.
