The National Stock Theft Prevention Forum (NSTPF) has expressed concern at a recent increase in the theft of weaner calves and large groups of mature cattle in South Africa.
According to Willie Clack, chairperson of the forum, the theft of weaners began escalating between two and three years ago. “This crime occurs countrywide, but it has recently spiked in the Free State and North West,” he added.
More than 200 weaners valued at around R1 million were reported stolen in these provinces over the past month. In one incident, five weaners that were stolen in Sannieshof were found later in Ventersdorp.
