Are kids just the latest target in the lucrative vitamin marketplace, or is there a genuine need for supplements for them?
Doctors are often asked if children need dietary supplements. The answer is some children need supplements in certain circumstances. “Remember that enriched and fortified foods like wholegrain cereals/bread and others, may have the same added nutrients that supplements provide,” says Rozanna M. Rosly, Head of Dietetic Services, UM Specialist Centre.
“For some children, supplements may be important. Your child may need some vitamin or mineral supplements if your family’s diet is limited to certain food groups. For example, if your household is vegan and you adhere to a strict vegetarian diet that includes no animal products – such as dairy products like eggs or milk – your children may need vitamin B12, vitamin D or even iron supplements. Be sure to consult a paediatrician on your children’s nutrient intake so they have a safe vegan diet.
Childhood is a critical time for growth and brain development, so particular vitamins and supplements may be recommended, says Rozanna, who also specialises in general nutrition, women’s health and geriatric. “Remember supplements are just supplements, they’re not an excuse to neglect healthy eating. Remind your children that supplements are not sweets or candy, even if they come in fun names, colours, shapes and package designs.
The decision about whether a supplement will benefit a child is not just about making up for a presumed dietary deficiency.
