Our beauty writer Clara gets up close and personal with the amazing and multi-talented Kat Von D, celebrity tattooist and founder of Kat Von D Beauty.
Not only is Kat beautiful, she’s also exceedingly kind, humble, hardworking and incredibly witty – a true artist who stays true to herself and stands up for what she believes in. Here’s what Kat has to say about beauty, her makeup line and her sources of inspiration.
What is your first memory of makeup and what inspired you to create Kat Von D Beauty?
My first memory of it was watching my mother get ready. To me, she looked like a beauty queen. She wasn’t a pageant model or anything like that, but she was just always very feminine. It wasn’t until I was twelve or so that my sister and I snuck into her makeup drawer and played around with her makeup. That was like my first time actually putting lipstick on, but we didn’t really know what we were doing back then. Little did I know that it would be such a pivotal moment later on in my life, to immerse myself so much in the beauty world. When I ended up launching my makeup line nine years ago, I named my first eyeshadow palette Galeano – which is my mum’s maiden name – to pay homage to my first experiences with makeup. She would use that eyeshadow palette all the time and she still does to this day.
