BAZAAR rounds up the luxury boutique hotels in Malaysia, all of which are a reflection of our diverse culture and landscape.
THE RUMA HOTEL AND RESIDENCES
DESIGN PARADISE As KL’s only member of The Leading Hotels of the World (LHW), The RuMa Hotel and Residences is a result of British architect Andy Hall’s creative energy. Drawing reference from the 20th Century when metal cages were used to house canaries that detected gas leaks in mines, the terracotta bird cage in the entrance foyer surrounds a custom-designed bronze water fountain.
STAR OBJECT The exclusive centerpiece for The RuMa Hotel is an eye-catching showpiece named Kebayaku by Dato’ Sri Bernard Chandran. “Kebayaku was crafted in gold because it symbolises prosperity and health,” says the designer. “Malaysians love all things that shine.” Flanked by the majestic double spiral staircase, the dress is made of intricate old geometrical squares and 3D-cut metal butterflies—a visual experience in its own.
KICK BACK The story of tin mining carries on to the grand salon, where the ceiling is made of copper. Here, savour scones and sip on the finest teas poured from a melon-shaped pewter teapot from Royal Selangor. Alternatively, order a gin and tonic infused with local elements, from pandan leaves to wild highland peppers. 7, Jalan Kia Peng, Kuala Lumpur. Tel: 03-2778 0888. www.theruma.com
ALILA BANGSAR
DESIGN PARADISE Renowned duo Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, of design firm Neri and Hu, take the reins here. All 143 rooms across seven floors exude an understated elegance within a storied space, in the form of slatted timber against cool marble, and custom furnishings insoothing tones, with plenty of natural light.
