The spirit of rock ’n’ roll lives on in the biggest beauty trends of the season.
Glam rock, punk, post-punk, New Romantics, and even, all-out heavy metal—the transmutations of rock throughout the decades were found across all four Fashion Weeks, saluting the increasingly daring expressions and trends inspired so much by culture and music. So many reference points began with glittery space boy Ziggy Stardust. “David Bowie inspired at least half of the tribes,” writes Luella Bartley in her Guide To English Style. “Ziggy Stardust was the hero of the Glitter Revolution; he made it okay for everyone to wear mascara.”
Edie Campbell girls took to the razor-punk liners and a dip in glitter, while at Burberry Prorsum, models shedded “glitter tears of happiness”. Mainstay make-up creative director Wendy Rowe demonstrated the application of sparkles on Edie Campbell: “The girls need to look quite strong,” she quips. “I created a dark eye with glitter tears, and a dishevelled worn-in eye with glitter scattered across the eye and cheekbone.”
Across the room, hair maestro Sam McKnight put finishing touches to the faux-mohawk shag. “I wanted a rock ’n’ roll vibe, sort of like rockabilly hair,” he says. “It’s a little dirty rock ’n’ roll ... hair that’s been slept in after the party, caught in the rain the morning after, and left to dry on the journey home.”
