At Milan Fashion Week, Giorgio Armani eschewed fashion’s perception of maximalism—intricate patterns and bold colours—and showed us how to paint it, instead, with blacks and velvet.
If there’s one man who could reappropriate eveningwear for day, it’s Giorgio Armani. After all, who better to trust than he who dressed three of the Oscars’s glittering leading ladies earlier this year? His innate knack for knowing exactly what a woman wants, paired with his brilliant amalgamation of elegant cuts, romantic drapery, and sophisticated silhouettes, sets him apart from his peers—most notably, this season.
Amid a sea of fashionable grandiose that filled the Milanese air during the Autumn/Winter ’16 circuit, the Italian fashion designer served up a fresh approach for the subdued maximalist. It was a refreshing turn of events, especially since designers left, right, and centre had opted to jump aboard the Michelebandwagon. “After the euphoria of colour, the vanity fair seen over the past two years, I felt we should cleanse ourselves of this need to surprise through a palette of colours and a mix of fabrics,” Armani notes. He clearly had a stroke of genius— swathes of black velvet found a balance between his signature asceticism and excessive touches.
