Shampooing isn’t exactly a complicated science, but you’d be amazed by how a few tweaks to your routine can give you hair that’s shinier, healthier and easier to manage. Your shower is already your most soothing moment of the day – now make it the most productive
Find the Right Formulas
Staring at the rows of shampoos and conditioners in the haircare aisle can make you feel like the Bachelorette. How do you choose the one? ‘Volumising formulas are good for fine hair and moisturising formulas are ideal on dry hair, and for dyed hair, pick a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner,’ says Garnier celebrity stylist Tommy Buckett. But if you have more than one issue you want to address, go with a sulphate-free formula. ‘It’s gentle on all hair types,’ he says. ‘If your ends tend to break or if your hair is bleached, you need a protein-infused strengthening shampoo.’ Switch between that and a moisturising shampoo without protein. ‘Too much protein can make hair brittle, so don’t use one every time you wash,’ Buckett explains.
Turn down the temp
A steamy shower may feel heavenly, but ‘hot water is very stripping to your hair and scalp,’ explains hairstylist Ryan Trygstad. ‘Keep the temperature on the warm side to help open the cuticles, so your shampoo and conditioner can penetrate better. Then, at the end of your shower, do a five-second cold-water rinse to seal the cuticles shut, which helps boost shine.’
