Or how the dated concept should not involve dating to survive
Neeraj Sharma hasn't lost hope. Lean and dapper in a checkered Sherlock Holmes-like trench coat, he is certain he will meet a special someone this Sunday. The 35-year-old pharma executive has invested in a plan with a dating company which allows him to try four speed-dating events culminating in a singles' party in Goa. When I make a snide remark about how archaic speed dating seems, Neeraj seems well informed. "Obviously, speed dating predates social media...," he stops mid-sentence.
I nod in agreement. An unrestrained diet of good ol’ American sitcoms in my adolescent days made me go on a "date" for the first time with that funny valentine when I was 15. Blind dating seemed supremely exciting and was part of the college lexicon, but never quite assumed the definite contours of the real thing. And, speed dating? We knew it existed; somebody somewhere was doing it. Some of the peer-reviewed observations from throbbing hearts and heads: "it must be fun when you are drunk", "sounds exhausting", "too confusing", "leaves you brain-dead", "should wear blindfolds, too".
