We heart the holidays as much as the next girl. But between present probs and run-ins with relatives, there are sometimes that can test your spirit faster than you can say “Grinch.” We’re talking about those super awkward (but also super #relatable moments)— like when you accidentally show up to a Secret Santa party empty-handed. Whoops.

To help avoid mistletoe meltdowns, we consulted Myka Meier, director of Beaumont Etiquette in New York City. The queen of class helped us create a plan to party perfection—so whether it’s with your fam or your friends, you can deck (not wreck!) the halls.

Just one note of caution from one of Myka’s former students, Allie J., 18: “Take a picture of yourself in your outfit before you leave. I once wore a black top to a Christmas party and when I looked on Instagram the next day, I discovered that camera flash made it totally see-through.”
