It would not be an exaggeration to say that my love for Corbett Tiger Reserve began when I was just a year old. I have been going to the park every year since then with my parents!
Although I have seen tigers on numerous occasions earlier, our trip in January 2016 was extra special. We were staying at the serene and picturesque Malani Forest Rest House in Bijrani zone. During the evening safari, our fi rst sighting within just a few minutes of entering the zone, was that of a magnifi cent Changeable Hawkeagle perched on a tree branch. Just ahead in the grasslands were some chital frolicking, playing and enjoying the last few hours of daylight. After crisscrossing through the grassland patches mixed with trees, we reached the hilly terrain of the dense jungle.
As we entered this section, the temperature seemed to drop as not much sunlight reached the ground. Corbett is known for its variety and number of species of both birds and animals. The terrain here is generally hilly. As our Gypsy gradually climbed up a hill and reached a patch of thick forest, I heard a deer call, coming from some distance. Suddenly, all of us were in active mode with our senses on extreme alert. The driver drove towards the direction of the call. I thought that a tiger must be on the prowl. The atmosphere was full of excitement and anticipation.
