I&rsquo;ve always been&nbsp;a go-getter, working late nights and constantly traveling for my job in conference and trade show planning. So about 10 years ago when I noticed tingling in my chest when work got particularly tense, I believed the doctors who said that it was just stress and I needed to relax more. Then one morning in 2008, at age 37, I woke up with severe pain in my chest, jaw, lower back, and left arm. I dragged myself to work anyway, but when I told my boss how I felt, he said I needed to go to the emergency room.<p>It turned out I was having a heart attack. I&nbsp;couldn&rsquo;t believe it. I knew my grandfather had died of a heart attack, but I&nbsp;didn&rsquo;t find out until two days later that he&rsquo;d also had his at 37. During my months of recovery, I learned that nearly everyone on my mom&rsquo;s&nbsp;side of the family had had heart disease or struggled with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. So I began making changes. At the time, even though I maintained a healthy weight, I&nbsp;didn&rsquo;t pay much attention to the food I ate. I now eat more fish and consume red meat only on occasion. I also took up yoga and rock climbing.</p><p>After my heart attack, my mom asked me not to talk about it. In my family, it&nbsp;isn&rsquo;t something that&rsquo;s discussed. But I just&nbsp;couldn&rsquo;t keep silent, because my story was an opportunity to help other people. Now I&rsquo;m a volunteer for the American Heart Association&rsquo;s Go Red For Women, encouraging women to become more aware of their risk factors and family history. Even though it&rsquo;s uncomfortable to bring up the past, it&rsquo;s incredibly important for a heart-healthy future.</p>
