Anxiety is no match for this stress-sniffing dog.
Each weekday morning, roughly 80 students arrive at the Calais School, a special education center in Whippany, NJ, where they are greeted with a sniff and a wagging tail by Cali, one of the school’s three service dogs. The kids, ranging in age from 5 to 21, wave or call excitedly to the 3-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback as if they are greeting an old friend.
Calais students are on the autism spectrum, or have mood or neurological disorders or ADHD. Whenever a child becomes anxious or agitated, Cali’s presence can help prevent meltdowns.
