And it’s where his daughter Christina learned to water-ski. A legendary resort opens just in time for a Greek summer.
The usual Greek itinerary has long been: two days in Athens at the Hotel Grande Bretagne, to see the Acropolis, maybe with a day trip to Delphi, where the famous oracle presided. And then it would be off, by ferry or plane, to some combination of islands.
But this is changing with the recent opening of the Four Seasons Astir Palace on the Athenian Riviera, the 35-mile stretch of coast between the city and the temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounio, to the south. It is close enough to central Athens (30 minutes by car, 10 by helicopter) that you can base yourself there and forgo staying in Athens altogether. And its setting, on a pine-clad promontory that juts into the Saronic Gulf, might just give the Aegean islands a run for their money.
