TWO NATIVE SONS RETURN HOME TO FIND A HISTORIC CITY THRIVING.
On a cold winter night in the German city of Hamburg, a procession of shiny black BMW and Mercedes sedans approached the Elbphilharmonie, the city’s gleaming new wavelike glass concert hall designed by the Pritzker Prize winners Herzog & de Meuron for the city’s philharmonic orchestra. This time, however, the guests weren’t there for music—they had come for Chanel.
Karl Lagerfeld was once again summoning the power of the house’s artisan workshops for the Métiers d’Art collection, showcasing the exquisite embroidery of Lesage, the feather work of Lemarié, the costume jewelry of Desrues, and the hats of Maison Michel. Top customers (clad in tweed, naturally), German cognoscenti (the papers were frenzied over who would be invited), international fashion editors, and celebrities (including Chanel regulars Kristen Stewart, Tilda Swinton, and Lily-Rose Depp) packed the hall. That Hamburg was chosen shouldn’t come as a surprise: Lagerfeld happens to be one of the city’s most famous sons.
