A pioneering miami orchestra is out to save classical music.
The conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, who recently announced that he will retire from the San Francisco Symphony in 2020 after 25 years at its helm, was a thirtysomething rising star back in 1987 when he got a call from a man named Ted Arison. Arison, the wealthy founder of Carnival Cruise Lines, and his wife Lin had recently been on holiday in London with plans to dine with a friend, the maestro Georg Solti. Before dinner Solti was to conduct a youth orchestra concert, and he invited the couple to watch. Barely four measures in, the Arisons were shocked by the level of talent in those young musicians, and they immediately decided to create something similar at home in Miami. Soon thereafter they found Thomas.
