A store employee refused to sell it to us because we weren&rsquo;t 18. There is no law that prevents someone underage from buying the contraceptive, but at the time, I didn&rsquo;t know my rights. I did, however, know about the dangers of unprotected sex (I had basic knowledge from looking things up online), so we found another place that would sell to us. It&rsquo;s scary to think that a cashier who lied and tried to shame me increased my risk of getting pregnant or an STI.After that incident, I realized that the facts I did know had prevented me from becoming a statistic. I also realized that, unfortunately, not everyone has access to that important information.KNOWLEDGE IS POWERAt my school, we didn&rsquo;t really have sex ed. We had a health class, and whenever sex was brought up, it was to scare us instead of teaching us what to do if we were sexually active. I learned nothing. I was not even taught about consent.The problems with that approach were impossible to ignore: Tulare County, where I live, has some of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the state. People in my family were teen moms. I know girls at my school who are teen moms. Whenever I see pregnant classmates, I think, Wow, the education system really failed them.The issue felt personal to me, and I wanted to fight for my community.GETTING BUSYWhen I heard about the Healthy Youth Act, I saw an opportunity to help make the law work in reality. I&rsquo;m part of ACT, a local nonprofit organization that develops leadership skills in young adults, and we came up with a plan to make sure my school was providing real, science-based sex ed.To get adults&rsquo; support, I spoke in front of the school board about why sex ed is important. I explained how it&rsquo;s about so much more than sex&mdash;it&rsquo;s about things like what a healthy relationship looks like and the biology of our bodies.My school did step up and began providing better sex ed. But I didn&rsquo;t stop there. I attended a community-wide conference to share sexual-health info from a teen&rsquo;s perspective. And during prom, I handed out free condoms. The other kids looked up to the work that I was doing and even the teachers loved how involved and passionate I was.I recognize there&rsquo;s still work to be done. I think LGBT teens need a better sex-ed curriculum. But now I know what it feels like to make a difference, and that&rsquo;s what inspires me to keep going.
