SO YOU WANT A TATTOO…
BEFORE YOU GO:
The importance of choosing the right image can’t be understated, but finding the right shop and artist are also critical. Start your research on Instagram and then review artists’ portfolios online, or stop into a local tattoo parlor to check out the vibe (obviously it should be clean, and the artists should wear disposable gloves and use disposable, sterilized needles). “Word of mouth is another great way to find an artist. If you love someone’s tattoo, ask who did it,” says tattoo artist Virginia Elwood, a co-owner of Saved Tattoo in Brooklyn.
Many shops offer walk-in hours, which is an easy option if you’re getting a small tattoo or flash design (the stock images you see in books and on the walls of tattoo shops). If you’re going for something large or custom— or want a specific person to ink you—call or e-mail ahead of time to make an appointment. And ask about the cost up front; prices vary considerably depending on the studio’s location (you’ll pay more in a big city) and the size, number of colors, and intricacy of the tattoo. Many places charge a minimum, anywhere from $50 to $100, and there might be a flat rate for small pieces or an hourly rate for large or custom designs (it could be $100 per hour and up, based on the artist’s popularity and experience).
