I’m no stranger to a detox. For three long months, I cut dairy out of my diet, thinking it might be triggering my acne (mildly successful!). Another time, I nixed all added sugars for two weeks in an attempt to temper my sweet tooth (epic failure!). I’ve even made it through a week of a vegan meal-delivery service that was so new-agey it would have made Gwyneth Paltrow’s eyes roll. For me, a detox is a reset button: I do one whenever I feel like I haven’t been taking care of myself.
This time it was my hair that needed some TLC. For a decade, I had been treating my frizzy, perpetually dehydrated curls like a nuisance that only a flatiron could fix, and I would spend roughly 30 minutes each day straightening them into a more manageable state. I also got highlights every other month, which didn’t help the condition. At 25, I realized I had no idea what my hair even looked like naturally. Was it still curly? Was it actually frizzy—or had the heat damage just rendered it so? I needed a fresh start.
