Nice to meet you!” Four years ago, I dreaded hearing those words at work events and parties, because they were usually coming from acquaintances I had met multiple times before. Whenever it happened, I would smile and play along— Yes, very nice to “meet” you—but it was humiliating. There was no way that many people could be that forgetful; it must be that I was forgettable. Something had to be done.
My first instinct as a beauty editor was to change my appearance: I needed a signature style. Overhauling my wardrobe would cost too much, applying idiosyncratic makeup every morning seemed tedious, and committing to a bold accessory for the rest of my life just oozed desperation, like that woman who collects and wears quirky, embellished eyeglasses because they’re her thing. No thanks.
