For Hallie Meyers-Shyer, it’s all about setting the scene. That much is clear in the 30-year-old’s newly released directorial debut, Home Again, and at the meticulously curated bash she threw at her L.A. home to celebrate its release.
Hallie Meyers-Shyer is lining up arrangements of white peonies in a dramatic row down the middle of a long, wooden pergola framed dining table. There’s not much else for Meyers-Shyer to fuss with in the Pinterest-worthy spread, which consists of a understated sand-and-cream-plaid tablecloth offset by blush napkins, set for a fete that’s set to start any minute. (It doesn’t hurt that the backdrop is L.A.’s lush Benedict Canyon.) Once she’s satisfied with the positioning of the vases—and just before the first guests arrive—she cues up the music, a ’70s-inspired mix heavy on Carole King.
If the whole scene sounds straight out of a Nancy Meyers movie, you’re not off base: Meyers-Shyer, 30, is the daughter of romcom royalty Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer (Something’s Gotta Give, The Parent Trap, It’s Complicated, What Women Want— films where the relaxed-yet-luxe interiors are just as memorable as the slice-of-life point of view). This month, Meyers-Shyer will officially enter the family business with Home Again, about a recently separated mother of two (Reese Witherspoon) who returns to her childhood home in L.A. to figure out next steps, only to find herself caught in a love quadrangle between three dashing twenty somethings living in her guest house and her ex (Michael Sheen), who’s flown in from New York to surprise her.
