Animal expert DR. TRICIA EARLEY answers questions about tired bunnies, “stargazing” chicks, and not-so-furry kittens.
Q This spring, our rabbit has been noticeably lethargic. Normally, she loves to play and gets excited when warmer weather allows for more exploring. What do you think the problem is? T.L., Columbia, SC
A If your bunny is uninterested in playtime, make sure it isn’t due to a medical issue. Keep in mind that rabbits shed their winter coats in early spring, a process called molting. It can happen other times of the year as well, but early spring is the time of the biggest molt. This process can take two to six weeks, and it’s often accompanied by behaviors like frequent licking and grooming. As you can imagine, all the swallowing of fur can hinder digestion and movement in the intestinal tract. Brush your rabbit daily, have plenty of hay on hand, and consider daily treats of dried papaya or fresh banana to keep things moving. Remember that rabbits easily overheat when they have their winter coats and it’s warm outside. Panting is a sign that it’s time to go inside right away. Also consider making the backyard as enticing as possible. Cardboard boxes, plastic blocks, and children’s bowling pins are a big hit in the bunny world. And if your rabbit doesn’t have a friend, it’s up to you to entertain—they aren’t meant to hop solo, so provide him with plenty of activity time.
Q My dog, Hershey, has a problem with reverse sneezing when she gets overly excited. Is there anything I can do to help her? She looks so uncomfortable! E.O., Chattanooga, TN
