A California antiques dealer’s passion for found items doesn’t begin and end with the workday. Her favorites make their way home for the long haul.
ANTIQUES DEALER Jeni Maus entered her trade by happy accident more than 10 years ago when her husband, Joel, decided to open a photography studio in Fullerton, California. Joel needed a space appropriate for portrait sittings—engagement and bridal sessions, in particular— so he turned to his wife for design help. She headed out to her favorite local flea markets and antiques fairs, loaded up on inventory, and set about furnishing the studio with her scores.
One day, a wedding planner popped by and asked if the vintage finds were available to rent. “That’s when I researched antique rentals on the internet, and I found out that no one was really doing that exclusively,” says Jeni. So she launched Found Vintage Rentals (foundrentals.com) with 88 timeworn pieces, most of which were being used in the Maus home and the photography studio. Business boomed from the start—so much so that she has now expanded her rental business upstate and opened a retail space, the Found Shop (thefoundshop.com), in downtown Fullerton. It also offers custom furniture, including deep-seated sofas like the ones in her living room (right) and gray slip covered dining chairs (above).
