Honest answers to your most private questions
Is there actually such a thing as a “mindgasm”? I don’t buy it.
A Getting so aroused by your thoughts that you climax without any touching is possible. “Your brain is the biggest sex organ you have,” explains clinical sexologist Dawn Michael, PhD, who’s seen women think themselves off IRL. That said, it’s not exactly easy. Using mind power alone to reach your peak takes practice, and only a few people can achieve it, says Michael. But there is another potential way to score hands free ecstasy: You can try for a “nocturnal emission,” or—to put it in a less gross-sounding way—an orgasm in your sleep. Although it’s an involuntary response, reading a steamy story or thinking hot thoughts before you hit the hay may make it possible.
I find foreplay more intimate than intercourse. Is that weird?
A Nope, it’s totally normal. Foreplay can feel emotionally intense because many of the moves—kissing, caressing, etc.—trigger oxytocin (the love hormone) to flood through your body and boost your arousal, making you feel super in sync with and connected to your partner. Also, foreplay doesn’t have a particular goal, says Jenni Skyler, PhD, director of the Intimacy Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Meaning: Pressure’s off and you can focus on all the good feels.
