REBEKAH RENNICK WAS SITTING IN A BATHROOM STALL WHEN SHE GOT THE BIGGEST IDEA OF HER LIFE.

It was September 2013, two weeks into her freshman year at Grinnell College in Iowa. She had ducked out of class after realizing with a groan that she was getting her period. She was far from her dorm room, with no change for the tampon machine and a spanking new backpack, which she’d yet to stock with supplies. As she stuffed a wad of toilet paper in her underwear and hurried back to the lecture hall, Rennick started to wonder: Why should any woman feel such angst over something that happens on a monthly basis?

The longer she sat, the more she seethed. “It just didn’t make sense to me that we have to spend so much on these products,” says Rennick, now 22. “And then it occurred to me that my school has the ability to fund them and offer support.” As soon as class let out, she went rogue. She broke into a tampon machine using two bobby pins and placed the products on top for anyone to take. Before walking away, she scrawled a message in bright pink pen on a pad that she stuck to the front of the machine: “Grinnell should provide for our bleeding bodies.” Now, she says, “It was an impulsive thing.” Soon she’d broken into every machine on campus.
