Whether it’s automobiles or animals in the frame, the eye behind Gaurav Thombre’s camera is trained to capture the most stunning images.
GT: Everything in life can be so unpredictable and we are all lucky to get by with some good shots at life. Photography is no different. We were shooting the Porsche 718 Boxster - one of the most expensive sports cars in the world – and had planned a shot involving a horse running alongside the car. We were told the horse was well trained but the moment he was off the lead collar rope, he went mad and started running everywhere with full power. We were terrified because if he even touched the car we would be finished - game over! Just before the handlers caught him, he ran within a few inches of the car and I managed to freeze that frame. Big sigh of relief!
Which have been your other memorable projects?
GT: For Overdrive magazine, I shot an Audi TT in the basement. We created smoke for the shot by doing a burnout of a bike to capture the ray of light. That was what really sparked my interest in automotive photography! The Lamborghini Aventador Roadster and Coupe shoot is also memorable because this was the quickest photographed (10 minutes) and best composed frame till date. Other shoots that come to mind include the one for the Audi R8, traveling at a speed of more than 300 kmph; and the Mercedes Benz GL350 India registered car shot at sunrise in the dunes of the Sahara in Morocco.
