New releases Daddy and Poster Boys fail to impress the viewers
1st Prize DADDY
Finally, a Hindi filmmaker dares to make a movie that you’d expect from the likes of Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Cappola. In the past, Ram Gopal Varma has given us taut underworld sagas. So it’s great to see a film that stays true to the grit and gumption of a gangster saga as seen in Daddy. There are no usual song-and-dance routines to distract the viewer’s attention. The first half of Daddy is taut and relentless. Ashim Ahluwalia stays focussed on Arun Gawli’s story. He gives Arjun Rampal a prosthetic nose and the right amount of drama. The second half does lose steam thanks to its political agenda of painting a nationalist picture of Gawli. But the build-up to that lackluster ending is all glory. Daddy is a brave film.
