Swara Bhaskar gets talking on love, live-in and godfathers. Raghuvendra Singh enjoys the ‘politically incorrect’ conversation

A spoilt cat lives here!”… That’s the message written on the door of Swara Bhaskar’s newly bought home in the suburbs. Three cats welcome me as I walk inside, one a bit aggressively. “I love cats. They’re emotionally self sufficient, hygienic, low maintenance and they just chill. I wish I could be like them. I’m an emotionally dependent and clingy person,” says Swara. “I don’t like to return to an empty house. It’s nice to come home to life. I’ll die if I’m left alone. I’m scared of being lonely. I’m best friends with my maids because I need to talk. My maids know all about my life and I know all about theirs,” says the actor whose candour is invigorating.

It’s this beguiling honesty that perhaps is also responsible for colleague Sonam Kapoor’s fondness for Swara. “I had a pre-conceived notion that Sonam would be like a diva, a fashionista... But she’s a far more generous person than I am. She has a bigger heart than I do. She gets offended when people offer me supporting parts. She has warned directors, ‘Don’t you dare offer this role to Swara, she’s way better than that’,” reveals Swara. “Sonam even fought with her dad (Anil Kapoor) when they wanted me to cast as Anil sir’s wife in the series 24. ‘Dad, she’s my age, what’s wrong with you?’ Sonam had said,” recounts Swara of her bestie. Her friendship with Sonam, she says, has made her realise a precious truth. “Whether you’re a star kid or an actor.... everyone has the same dreams, the same insecurities.”
