To the sounds of cheers, the new Duke of Sussex and his best man the Duke of Cambridge made their way on foot down through Windsor Castle’s Lower Ward to St George’s Chapel.

The brothers both sported the blue doeskin frock coat of their old regiment the Blues and Royals, handmade by Dege & Skinner on Savile Row – the crowns on their epaulettes denoting the rank of major. Prince Harry displayed his pilot’s wings, which he gained while serving with the Army Air Corps, and his medal ribbons: the KCVO, Afghanistan with rosette, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Chatting to each other, the two men waved at the lucky invitees who had been given places inside the castle walls.

With the biggest moment of his life less than half an hour away, Harry – who received the Queen’s permission to keep his beard, despite suggestions he might shave – looked relaxed.

The groom, who had also been given permission to marry in the uniform by the Queen, made his way to the chapel’s West Steps, where he was greeted by the Dean of Windsor, David Conner.

After a few moments, Harry took off his cap and made his way inside, where guests were already waiting.
