Flexibility At What Cost?
Human Capital|December 2017

Workplace Flexibility, particularly in the IT industry, is an oft used parlance to render flexible working hours to accommodate employees viz. single and married women, and thereby ensure that there is a homogeneous environment in the company. However, this very measure backfires when employees who utilise such facilities bear the brunt of their manager, by way of average ratings during the appraisal cycle, thereby cutting short their zeal and productivity

Flexibility At What Cost?

These were days when the IT industry was the most booming industry vertical, and some of the bigger IT companies were MNCs that deployed a large number of employees. "Prestige InfoTech" was one such prolific MNC that was spread worldwide, and enjoyed an employee strength of more than 10,000. The company was also recruiting Engineering graduates through campus interviews. And, Prestige Infotech being renowned for adapting the highest standards, had the most stringent interview procedure. Students, therefore, found it highly difficult to crack the interview held by this company. The selection procedure involved an aptitude round followed by two technical interviews, and an HR round to filter and thereby select the best of the candidates from any institute. For the graduates, it was a matter of extreme pride to be selected by this prized company. Moreover, the company paid a good package to freshers as compared to other IT companies.

The company also maintained the practice of recruiting those students, who as a part of the B.E. course, completed their projects in the company, and were referred by their respective guides after technical interviews. The company would conduct a test to select a few students before giving them an opportunity to carry out their engineering projects with the company, and the students in turn, were placed under the guidance of some of the best employees of the company. All the campus joiners had to undergo a training of one month, which was inclusive of technical as well as soft skills training. After the completion of training, students were required to undergo an assessment exam based on the technology training they had undergone. Clearing this assessment exam was the criteria before them to be earmarked for further projects, or terminate their employment with the company. And, a student was allowed a maximum of three attempts.

Striking The Right Balance

In 2017, an employee in the HR Department of a leading global company received an excel sheet attachment in his official mail.
