An Alternate Reality

“Good photos are taken with your feet,” says Marina Sersale, who travels the world unraveling the imperceptible moments. Conchita Fernandes finds out more.

Have you ever wondered why you photograph certain subjects, or are drawn to specific moments? It is not fate or luck that brings you to a particular place, because there are no coincidences in photography. Irrespective of the kind of pictures you make, photography has always been about seeking answers. Sometimes we’re partially aware of this search, and sometimes we go through life without ever realising it. But we still continue shooting, despite the possibility of never finding an answer to why we photograph the way we do. Maybe some answers are never meant to be revealed, but we still continue seeking because it brings in some calm, some stability, some respite from the internal and external chaos that often surrounds us.

Ever since she took up cellphone photography in 2012, Marina Sersale has been on a search of her own—to find aspects of reality that people don’t see or are not aware of. “I am not necessarily interested in the obvious beauty of places or people (although I certainly appreciate it), but in what is not immediately visible. Or, in what becomes visible when I extrapolate one aspect of reality, and show the interaction between various elements within it to create something new,” she says.
