The One Car To Beat Them All?
Mercedes Benz had a houseful of future technology and design at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany this year, and a wide-ranging array it is. With an aim of offering more than ten all-electric vehicles in production by 2022, it was no surprise that all the German marque’s major unveils were electric-powered.
The German carmaker finally revealed its Mercedes-AMG Project One supercar which brings with it a Formula One-sourced 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine with pneumatic valves which revs to 11,000rpm. This is supplemented with a total of four electric motors - one on each front wheel, and one each on the split-turbocharger and the crankshaft.
The result, more than 1,000PS, capable of a mad dash to 200kmph in six seconds, and onwards to a 350kmph top speed. That’s less time than most people will take to read the last sentence. The Mercedes-AMG Project One runs to 200kmph quicker than the Bugatti Chiron. The car will also manage 25km in all-electric mode.
Even the electric motors on the Project One will hit 50,000rpm, while most others spin to 20,000rpm. The MGU-H which cuts out turbo lag also recovers 80 per cent of the energy when you take your foot off the throttle pedal, claims Mercedes-AMG.
