The morning clouds make way for a brilliant blue sky with candyfloss clouds near Charminar. On the Old City streets of Rein Bazaar, Etebar Chowk, Alijah Kotla, Darulshifa, Kali Kabar and Chaderghat, families mark out turfs and wait. The Muharram procession commemorating the martyrdom of Husain is both an event and a spectacle on the streets of Hyderabad. On Tuesday afternoon of ashoora or the 10th day of Muharram, young men force passersby to stop and sip coloured sherbets and partake food.
The lanes are a sea of black with a few children dressed in colourful finery. The ceremonial procession of alams (battle standards) begins from the Bibi ka Alawa at Dabeerpura.
