It was reported this week that the eight teams taking part in the ECB’s new T20 competition will not be named after the location in which they are based. It is a move made by the ECB in an attempt to keep fans happier, while also freeing up a bit of leeway for owners.
While it may not be in their title, each side will still be based somewhere so it’s unlikely we will see teams with floating home bases but it keeps it a lot more open. If you look at other tournaments around the world, the Knight Riders have got a team in the Indian Premier League and the Caribbean Premier League.
It’s Kolkata in the IPL and Trinbago in the CPL, and they were looking to get a team in the South Africa competition too. With no city to be linked to, it keeps it open for owners to come in down the line and put their stamp on it.
