About Lass Night

From Ghost in the Shell to a girls’ trip in hell, Scarlett Johansson takes a break from action flicks to exercise her comedic muscles in the rowdy caper Rough Night.

About Lass Night

It’s been a while since Scarlett Johansson has been in a comedy. The last time the 32-year-old New York native appeared in one, it was 2013’s Don Jon, opposite Joseph GordonLevitt. During that time, she was best known for her physical and pugilistic prowess in Lucy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the recent Ghost in the Shell; and her sultry voice in Her and The Jungle Book.

Interestingly, it was before cameras started rolling on Ghost in the Shell that Johansson came across the script for Rough Night. “I rarely get comedy sent in my direction and when I do it’s never something that’s so sharp like this,” says Johansson, who got to show off her comedic chops a few times on Saturday Night Live, where she's brought the house down with her impressions of Ivanka Trump and Rosario Dawson.

The script was a gift from the heavens. On top of being hilariousas-fudge, it was written by Lucia Aniello and Paul W Downs, the creative team behind the acclaimed TV show Broad City, which Johansson happens to be a fan of. “The script made me laugh out loud, and I’m not a person that laughs out loud — I laugh a lot on the inside, but [this script] made me belly laugh.”

In Rough Night, Johansson plays Jess, who reunites with four college pals (Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glaza and Zoë Kravitz) for her bachelorette party in Miami. But things get a little out of control, they end up with a dead male stripper. They have two options: Call the cops or bury the body…

And making Rough Night was a memorable experience for the Avengers actor. “Oh my God, we were laughing non-stop,” says the mother of one, who split from her art curator husband in March. “Absolutely, non-stop. Those girls are so good at what they do. And I kind of bring my own element to it. I love being the straight man for all this stuff.”
